About PermitPrep
PermitPrep is a free study resource for new drivers preparing for the written knowledge exam required to obtain a learner permit in the United States. The site covers all fifty states and the most common topic areas tested by every state DMV: road signs, right of way, speed limits, parking, alcohol and driving, school zones, intersections, pedestrians and bicycles, emergency vehicles, and railroad crossings.
Who PermitPrep is for
The most common visitor is a teenager studying for the first permit, often a few weeks before turning sixteen. The second most common is an adult who has driven for years on a foreign license and is converting to a U.S. state license. The third is a returning driver whose license has lapsed long enough to require retesting. All three audiences share a basic problem: state driver handbooks run between a hundred and two hundred pages, and reading the entire handbook cover to cover is exhausting and inefficient. PermitPrep distills the same material into focused practice questions with written explanations.
How the content is built
Each state page is built from the corresponding state's official driver handbook plus open-source compilations of practice questions, including the kamranahmedse driver-handbook repository on GitHub and supplementary state handbooks published by individual DMV websites. Wikidata supplies state metadata such as capitals, abbreviations, and demographic data. Every practice question has been written to match the style and difficulty of the actual exam, and every answer page contains a long-form written explanation of the underlying law, the safety reason behind it, the most common mistake drivers make, and a study tip.
What PermitPrep is not
PermitPrep is not affiliated with any state DMV, the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, or any government body. We are not a substitute for the official handbook, the official knowledge exam, or the official road test. Always confirm rules with your state's current driver manual before relying on them. Laws change, and posted limits vary by road segment.
Funding
PermitPrep is funded by display advertising. We do not sell user data and we do not require a signup. The site has no tracking pixels beyond standard ad measurement. If you would like to support the project, the most useful thing you can do is share a state page with a friend who is studying.
